I-20/Fulton Industrial Boulevard Interchange Streetscapes

Project Overview

Interchange Improvements & Enhancements

Improving the I-20/Fulton Industrial Boulevard interchange was identified by district stakeholders as the number-one priority in the original Fulton Industrial Master Plan. After completing important intersection operational and safety improvements in this area, in 2016 the CID commissioned the work of landscape designer Josh Winters and engineering firm Vaugh & Melton (now JMT) to begin to envision aesthetic enhancements for the interchange and surrounding areas.

The project scope included design and engineering, including a pedestrian traffic study. The project boundaries were the I-20/Fulton Industrial Boulevard interchange and Fulton Industrial Boulevard north to Martin Luther King, Jr. Drive and south to Frederick Drive.
Enhancements included:

  • New sidewalks with new decorative beauty strip
  • ADA-compliant pedestrian ramps
  • Brick-pattern decorative crosswalks
  • New streetlights
  • New gateway signage
  • New art pad
  • New landscaping, including shrubs, trees and ground cover

To visually identify and distinguish the district, a gateway monument sign was added to the safety projects. This area is also home to the Stella Nova gateway sculpture that was installed in 2019.

The CID invested $500,000, partnered with Fulton County on $1 million in funds from the voter-approved TSPLOST and partnered with GDOT, which invested more than $300,000 toward the new ADA ramps, for a total of $1.8 million invested. The CID continues landscaping and maintenance for the entire project area.
