I-20/Fulton Industrial Boulevard Interchange Revitalization
Economic Development > I-20/Fulton Industrial Boulevard Interchange Revitalization
A New Vision for a Major Interchange
The I-20/Fulton Industrial Boulevard interchange is the front door to the Fulton Industrial district — one of metro Atlanta’s most active and visible
economic corridors. For more than a decade, the CID has invested in this primary gateway, leading a series of infrastructure and streetscape projects that have
improved traffic flow and pedestrian safety at the interchange. Those efforts, paired with beautification work including landscaping, gateway signage and public art, have, measurably elevated the look and feel of
the interchange.
The Next Chapter: Economic Revitalization
The Fulton Industrial corridor has long been a major economic engine for the region. Over the years, however, the I-20/Fulton Industrial Boulevard interchange fell into decline, becoming associated with crime, blight and underused properties. Today, that story is changing. The CID is partnering with Fulton County leaders on the county’s Renew the District initiative – a $180+ million public-private redevelopment strategy aimed at revitalizing the Fulton Industrial Boulevard corridor and modernizing the Fulton County Executive Airport (Brown Field).
The transformation is already underway. Beginning in 2022, Fulton County strategically began to acquire the blighted hotels and several surrounding retail properties to assemble land for redevelopment. In March 2026, the last of the five hotels was demolished, clearing the way for new investment, job creation and a far stronger first impression at one of metro Atlanta’s most visible industrial gateways. The planned upgrades for Fulton County Executive Airport include runway and taxiway improvements, safety enhancements and the construction of a new $3 million fire and emergency rescue station.
Redevelopment Opportunities
Fulton County is actively marketing approximately 17 acres of prime, shovel-ready land at the I-20/Fulton Industrial Boulevard interchange and has issued a series of requests for proposals. The vision is clear: bring in the retail, services and amenities the corridor is missing, fill in vacant parcels with productive uses and establish a vibrant, welcoming presence of services at this critical entry point.

Visioning Session
To launch the revitalization effort, the CID and Fulton County hosted a visioning session in June 2022 centered on Fulton County-owned properties surrounding the I-20/Fulton Industrial Boulevard interchange. The conversation and stakeholder input were captured in a summary report that distills the key themes and recommendations that continue to guide the project today.
- Participants: More than 30 stakeholders took part, including representatives from the city of South Fulton, Fulton County, commercial property owners, business owners and tenants.
- Discussion topics: Participants explored potential future land uses, including retail, office, industrial and distribution, hospitality, and education or training.
- Outcomes: Stakeholders shared feedback and voted on preferred land uses and development scenarios. Pairing open discussion with real-time voting produced a clear set of priorities and development considerations for the area.
