Gateway Enhancement: Fulton Industrial Boulevard at Martin Luther King Jr. Drive

Project Overview

Strengthening the Corridor’s Identity

To strengthen corridor identity and foster long-term economic vitality, the Fulton Industrial CID is transforming the high-traffic intersection of Fulton Industrial Boulevard and Martin Luther King Jr. Drive into a welcoming and recognizable entrance to not only the Fulton Industrial district but also the city of Atlanta. A primary gateway, this intersection is home to the Fulton County Executive Airport and serves as a point of arrival to Atlanta for business travelers and others who use the airport. The gateway plays an essential role in shaping first impressions of the city and the Fulton Industrial corridor and serves as a key connector to historic neighborhoods, downtown destinations and the Chattahoochee River waterfront.

Gateway Signage and Wayfinding

To welcome district visitors, a branded gateway monument sign at the intersection will establish and reinforce a cohesive theme that extends along the 11-mile Fulton Industrial Boulevard corridor. In addition, wayfinding elements will strengthen the corridor’s sense of place and professional image and provide helpful guidance to visitors in the district.

Streetscaping and Public Art

The project design incorporates complete streets principles and includes upgraded sidewalks, landscaped buffers and decorative pedestrian lighting to create a safer and more inviting environment, all while maintaining an efficient flow of vehicular traffic.

The medians along both corridors offer opportunities for curated public art installations, enriched by layered landscaping and hardscape elements to elevate the visual experience. Incorporating sculptural installations throughout the district reinforces that the Fulton Industrial area is more than a center of transportation and logistics –it is a place that values innovation, creativity and community. The public art installations also serve as a natural introduction to one of the area’s distinctive cultural assets, the Emma Darnell Aviation Museum & Conference Center, located just north of the intersection.
